The work began quietly, with the rescue of an orphaned female white rhino, “Pippi”, entrusted to us by ZimParks. Her recovery has been amazing, but the requirements quite different than with elephants. Special handling, feeding, and – critically – a highly trained professional canine unit, are at the foundation of our ongoing and future work with rhinos.”
Pippi was followed by, the rescue of a black rhino named “Africa”, who arrived with a terrible infection passed to her from her mother. Try as we might, and despite several months of what looked like encouraging recovery, Africa eventually succumbed to his illness, leaving us crestfallen
Despite this setback, we have greater resolve than ever to continue this all important work. This is the start of an exciting journey of enabling these incredible yet imperiled creatures the opportunity to live in the wild. The ultimate goal is to Rewild the rhinos back to the wild in Zimbabwe.
